THE MYTH ABOUT FAT REDUCTION
How often have we said, "I just want to lose this stomach." Well,
all the wraps, creams and exercises that are aimed at the problem areas won't reduce the fat in those areas. Contrary
to what the infomercials suggest, there is no such thing as spot reduction. Fat is lost throughout the body in a pattern dependent
upon genetics, sex (hormones), and age. Overall body fat must be reduced to lose fat in any particular area. It just
doesn't work that way, states Dr. Morocco-Collins, Doctor of Physical Therapy. "Our bodies store fat for energy. When
we need it we burn it from ALL parts of the body." Yes, specific exercises, like Pilates, to tone
your stomach and strengthen your core will help, but muscle and fat are two distinctly different types of tissues.
You can tone the muscle underneath the fat. The key to burning off the fat is to follow a well-rounded balance of exercise,
diet and stress reduction. That adds up to a healthy lifestyle. Your workout should consist of strengthening/toning,
cardio and stretching. Many women avoid strengthening, but keep in mind, light weights won't bulk you up and will help to
increase your metabolism. Higher metabolism requires more energy.... more fat burn! Its like a snowfall. When the snow
melts, it melts all over. It just takes a little longer to melt in those areas where there were mounds of snow!
